Due to the 36 mile bridge closure, we've had to modify our Childs Glacier Tours each year to best fit the needs of our guests, and the endless demands of working around the ever changing Copper River. This season may be our best yet and we are excited to share this amazing experience with you!
Whether you ride in the Lodge shuttle or drive your personal/rental vehicle out to our boat on the Copper River 30+ miles from town, the drive through the Chugach National Forest is a scenic way to start the morning! We usually leave town around 9:00 am and keep an eye out for moose, eagles, and bear along the Copper River Highway on the way to the boat. There is also an option for a quick rainforest hike (.5 mile) if you want to stretch your legs along the way.
Once we get to the Copper River Delta and reach the boat, the group leaves their vehicles behind and boards a vessel that is specifically designed for navigating this amazing river system. Like most activities in Alaska, weather appropriate clothing is a must and we highly suggest good wind/rain proof gear and sturdy shoes for the most comfortable experience.
Once we are off the river we still have a few miles to go in order to reach the Childs Glacier viewing area so the journey shifts to a shuttle van for the final leg.
At the Childs Glacier viewing area there will be several hours to view the glacier from one of several platforms, hike the trail to the Million Dollar Bridge, enjoy lunch at the picnic shelter, or just sit back and relax. Guides will be on hand to answer any questions you may have but this is primarily an area to explore on your own.
After our time at the Childs Glacier we make our return trip back downriver to our vehicles for the drive back towards Cordova. Its a full day tour when you include the travel to/from town so make sure you can dedicate a good portion of the day to this trip. We usually get back to the Lodge between 5pm and 6pm. What a great adventure incorporating so much that this area is famous for.
